NUI Maynooth today announced the establishment of the Callan Research Institute which will focus on the application of computer and communications technology to real world problems. The Callan Institute, which is already working with Intel, NXP and Alcatel Lucent, will prioritise working with industry to identify and answer relevant research questions in ICT technologies.

The inaugural Lt. General Dermot Earley Prize for the outstanding dissertation on the Certificate in Strategic Leadership programme at NUI Maynooth has been awarded to Lt. Colonel Patrick Mc Daniel. The award is named in honour of Lt. General Dermot Earley, former Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, who died earlier this year.

Planners, local and national policy makers, and researchers now have access to a free online facility from NUI Maynooth which provides a one-stop data and mapping portal to all publicly available information to assist in good planning and evidence-based decision making.  The All Island Research Observatory (AIRO) was launched today by Minister of State for Sustainable Planning, Ciaran Cuffe TD.

Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan T.D., today turned the sod at a ceremony to mark the commencement of NUI Maynooth’s new €20 million library extension. Construction will commence immediately and will take 22 months to complete. The project will employ 200 construction workers at its peak, with an anticipated 160 associated jobs supported over the period of the build

RIAN.ie - Ireland’s new Research Publications Portal was launched today by Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan T.D. The launch is the highlight of Ireland’s contribution to ‘International Open Access Week’. Open access is an international movement to increase the global knowledge base. Research knows no borders and it is critical for Irish research to be easily accessible and feature prominently on the global research landscape.

NUI Maynooth today announced a partnership with St. Patrick’s Athletic Football Club which will provide third level scholarships to professional athletes. St. Patrick’s Athletic Under 20’s footballer Jake Carroll from Lucan has become the first player from the Club to receive a sports scholarship to undertake a three year Business Degree in Venture Management at NUI Maynooth.

Three new BA programmes were added; BA (Anthropology), BA (Multimedia) and BA (Politics) and also three new business degrees - BBS (Business and Management), BBS (Equine Business) and BBS (Venture Management) through the School of Business and Law.

NIRSA (National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis) at NUI Maynooth today called for the creation of an independent inquiry into the “catastrophic failure” of the planning system, which contributed towards the property bubble and financial crisis.  NIRSA said that like the Honohan and Regling & Watson reports on financial and banking regulation, an inquiry must be conducted into the formulation and implementation of planning policy, the over-zoning of land and granting of planning permission, and property tax incentives.

Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey T.D. today hosted a reception in Dublin Castle for over 250 of the world’s leading Irish Studies academics. Made up of representatives from more than 20 countries including Japan, Egypt, Brazil, India and the US, the academics are in Ireland as part of the 34th annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (IASIL), which is being held at NUI Maynooth.

The awarding of first class honours degrees at NUI Maynooth today is fully in line with the Irish University sector.

The majority of students graduating from NUI Maynooth in 1994 were undertaking the more broadly based BA General and BSc General, which did not have honours classifications, and therefore first class honours degrees could not be awarded. The analysis recently reported in the media did not take general degrees into account and is incorrect.

Ms. Anastasia Crickley, Head of the Dept of Applied Social Studies at NUI Maynooth has been elected, in New York to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) for a four-year term.  Ms. Crickley was nominated for election by the Irish Government.  She will be the first Irish woman to serve on any UN Committee.

NUI Maynooth has been informed of the decision to dissolve the National University of Ireland (NUI). The NUI's four constituent universities, NUI Maynooth, University College Dublin, University College Cork, and NUI Galway, have the same statutory status as the State's three other universities but a small number of administrative and academic functions have been carried out on their behalf by the NUI.

Instruments capable of measuring the ability of surrounding trees andvegetation to consume carbon dioxide emissions have been located at sites across Dublin as part of a joint research initiative led by scientists from NUI Maynooth and University College Dublin.

 

NUI Maynooth Lecturer receives CBE in Queen's Honours list

NUI Maynooth lecturer Seamus Taylor has been awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the British Honours System.  The award has been given for his services in promoting equality in the Britain through his roles as senior official with the Commission for Racial Equality and the Crown Prosecution Service.
