On Tuesday 2 May, the first annual Cardinal Newman/Maynooth Lecture, which was sponsored jointly by St Patrick’s College and the Departments of Education and English at NUI Maynooth, took place on campus. Fr Ian Ker, author of the definitive biography John Henry Newman, addressed the topic Newman’s Idea of a University: the Sacred and the Secular in Today’s University.
Cardinal Newman’s associations with Maynooth are many and varied. Not only did he often visit the College, but he also developed a lasting friendship with Fr Charles Russell who was President of Maynooth for several decades in the second half of the 19th Century. The Russell Library contains a lengthy correspondence between the two men.
