Much is being said about the role that research will play in delivering Ireland's Smart Economy. In this issue, Prof Ray O Neill, Vice President for Research makes the point that two of the key benefits of academic research are a source of new ideas and opportunities and a source of trained problem solvers, he argues that as well as investment in applied research, we must continue to invest in blue skies research in order to fully reap the innovation returns that research can offer.
