Due to a small number of reported cases of Mumps on the campus of NUI Maynooth, the University has, in the interest of public health and safety, cancelled its “University Day” open day for tomorrow, Saturday April 26th.
The University had invited the 10,000 Leaving Cert students who selected NUI Maynooth in their CAO application forms to attend the college to find out more about their courses and student life. More than 90 per cent of these students have already been contacted by email and SMS to inform them of the cancellation and every guidance counsellor in the country has been contacted via e-mail.
NUI Maynooth has enacted its public health response plan. The situation has been reported to the HSE and a number of procedures have been put in place informing students and staff. Free vaccinations have been made available to all students through the University doctor in Maynooth. It is understood that a number of similar cases have occurred in other Irish academic institutions in the past number of weeks.
NUI Maynooth’s President Prof. John Hughes said “While an incident like this is unfortunate from the university’s point of view, particularly with the University Day coming up tomorrow, it is not uncommon and very hard to avoid in an environment of this nature which has a large population in a reasonably confined campus space. From a public health perspective it is best practice to take the precautions we have announced.”
University Day will regrettably, not be rescheduled for this year due to the proximity to the start of Leaving Cert examinations. As always the University will be delighted to answer any queries from prospective students either through email or by phone.
NUI Maynooth is Ireland’s fastest growing University and this year experienced a 13% increase in CAO first preference applications. Further information can be found on the University website www.nuim.ie.
